Matrix42: Windows Update requires a Reboot

Post by ctearney » 09. Dec 2016, 18:25

Systems that do a disk cleanup or run any type of update that triggers the Windows Update service cause the Empirum agent to go into a "Paused" state. No reboot notice is given and the agent is basically turned off until a manual restart is performed. I have heard from a few people that they have also seen this occur after Patch Management runs and the system is reboot after giving the typical Matrix42 Reboot notice.

Has anyone else seen this and if so were you able to make it so the Agent will provide a reboot notice installed of turning itself off? I attached a couple of screen captures of what I am seeing.

This has been solved with Empirum 16.1.1 (Client Mgmt 2015 SP1 Update 1).

Interesting, I am running 16.1.1.4602 and from reading the release notes for SP1 Update 1 it looks like this feature was added in this release unless I am reading the notes incorrectly. I can understand the logging piece but if the agent turns itself off from any further distributions how are you supposed to remotely reboot the system (with the client getting the Matrix42 reboot prompt that is)?

5.2.1. Advanced Agent - Log Message While Reboot is Pending
The agent sends a log with information about a pending restart to the Empirum Server to notify the administrator that no further software management action can be executed until the computer has been restarted. After the restart, a log will be sent with a respective message. Restarts can be triggered by Windows Update, WSUS or manual software installations.

5.2.2. Advanced Detection of Pending Windows Restarts
In addition, the Pending.xml file, additional information are used for detection purposes:
HKLM,SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\ RebootRequired

Not remotely (unless you integrate external tools like psshutdown to enforce the reboot).
But the user will get a reboot request even if the restart was not caused by the Empirum agent.

We are not seeing the reboot prompt from the Empirum agent when we experience this and if you say this issue was resolved with SP1 Patch1 then I am guessing we have an issue. Thank you for the info, I will open a ticket with support.

I have been told from support that there is no reboot notice from the agent. The only notification one will receive is if they hover their mouse over the tray icon a small "tag" will appear stating a restart is required. My opinion, I don't like that. If the agent can detect a restart is needed then why not just trigger a restart notice using the settings already in place with the agent? This make more sense to me then having systems not checking in and needing to be manually restarted (this can be a lot of overhead).
