Change Asset Type

We are in the process of adding new category types for SKUs so that we can make it easier to navigate and locate Assets in the portal as well as give us better reporting. Adding the new categories is easy but we need to move all the existing assets over to the altered SKU. For example if we take a SKU currently using the Configuration Item of "Universal Asset" and a Type of "AV Equipment" then modify CI field to "General Peripherals" and the type to "Conference Phones" the update SKU loses its link to the assets that were previously entered.

I am pretty sure this can be remediated by updating each individual asset with the new CI and Type but wanted to see if anyone else has done this before?
